The Ionic pillar is one of the five classical Greek orders of architecture. Its characteristic spiralled capital is said to allude to the rolled parchment of ancient scrolls. This gives the Ionic order its strong relationship to wisdom and makes it the perfect symbol to represent this establishment.

Look up at the columns of any major library or place of learning and you will notice their capitals are often of the Ionic order.
